DONALDSON ANNOUNCES TWO NEW U.S. PATENTS ON A COMBINATION OF EMISSION REDUCTION DEVICES
DOC and Spiracle™ exceed California ARB 25 percent minimum emissions standard

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – January 3, 2008 – Donaldson Company (NYSE:DCI), a leading, worldwide manufacturer of filtration systems and parts, announced two new patents for a combination of tailpipe technologies and crankcase filtration that address ‘total engine emissions.’

Donaldson began working on a line of diesel emission reduction products in 2001 as part of evolving retrofit programs by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (ARB). These early efforts focused on the use of DOCs based on the reliability, robustness and broad applicability of the solution. The California program required a minimum particulate matter (PM) reduction level of 25% and DOCs provided only 15-20% particulate matter (PM) reduction on tailpipe emissions. Donaldson needed to develop a new approach to reducing diesel emissions.

Donaldson continued to develop a DOC-based approach by combining a crankcase filter with the DOC tailpipe device to address total engine emissions. This innovative combination resulted in a system that exceeded the 25% minimum. This new approach was recently granted two patents by the US Patent Office.

Donaldson’s total engine emissions approach was verified or approved by both California’s ARB and the US EPA. Upon testing, this approach proved that crankcase filters were also very effective at reducing in-cabin emissions, especially on school buses, where the crankcase vent emissions self-pollute the interior cabin.

Donaldson pursued a patent on this approach which ultimately expanded to include several tailpipe technologies, including partial filters and wall-flow filters. Together, these product combinations provide clean air agencies and regulators with cost-effective options to achieve varying program goals – whether focused on the most cost effective solution or on a solution that provides the highest overall efficiency.

“This innovative and differentiated approach has put Donaldson on the map in retrofit markets”, said Fred Schmidt, Director, Donaldson Retrofit Emissions group. “Not only does this approach provide greater reductions than competing ‘tailpipe only’ solutions, but the combination makes a direct and significant impact on the in-cabin air quality. Scientific studies have proven that diesel emissions cause adverse health effects, especially on respiratory and cardio-vascular health. The Donaldson approach provides significant emission reductions inside school buses, a benefit to both drivers and passengers.”
