MINNEAPOLIS MN – MAY 2004 -- Donaldson Company, Inc. introduces a Marine/Offshore gas turbine intake air filtration system that provides high velocity, 4-stage filtration to efficiently remove dirt & salt particulate and water droplets from the airstream that feeds the turbine. Salt particles in particular are corrosive and cause pre-mature wear on compressor blades.
The Donaldson GTMä housing is all stainless steel and the filter elements are metal-free to resist corrosion in harsh, oceanic environments. The four stages of filtration include: (1) marine louver vanes that remove salt & water droplets; (2) coalescer pre-filters to capture dry salts, particles and other large contaminant, as well as finer water droplets; (3) high-efficiency fine filters to remove the very small and sub-micron particulate; and (4) another bank of marine louvers to ensure that only clean, dry air is direct to the turbine.
GTM includes several design improvements over standard systems:
- Pre-filters and final filters that are NOT nested. This eliminates water carry-over.
- Easier filter servicing: the first set of marine louvers, which remove most of the water, and the pre-filters, which remove the carry-over water, are mounted in a pull-out drawer across the width of the intake face. The drawer slides out to allow access for speedy & convenient exchange of pre-filters and final filters.
- Leak-free construction: The frame that holds the elements is made using only seal welds for dirty-air-to-clean-air joints, thus eliminating any potential for leaks.
- Secure filter element retention: Filters are positively sealed to the frame and firmly secured with over-center latches that preclude leaks (instead of letting the suction of the turbine hold the filters in place.) This ensures that the seal remains effective even when the turbine is not running.
GTM is available in various sizes to accommodate airflow requirements for turbines of different sizes and space restrictions. Donaldson has global project management and manufacturing capability, so can build GTM systems virtually anywhere in the world that the customer needs.
Donaldson first announced and showed the GTM Marine/Offshore Filtration System at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in May 2004 in Houston TX.
